The last time that I entered a challenge, the adminstrators kindly resized my images as they exceeded the limit. I want to be able to do this myself. I have just finished some PP on a potential image for the new challenge. When I go to Image size in Phtoshop CS2 and adjust the pixels for 800 x 600 my pixel dimensions = 1.37M at a resolution of 72. I am sure that this will not be accepted. What do I need to do to get this in the correct size and still maintain the sharpness?

Thank -you all in advance for your assistance.

Anyone using CS2 care to explain how the control the compression of the saved JPG, or otherwise see/control the resulting file size?

I think that's the crux of Robert's question... Well, initially at least!

Here is a link that goes through the whole process in CS2
http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/photoshopcs2lessons/ss/sizepractice.htm

There srae essentially two stages for the panahallenge rules:
1. is getting the resolution/image pixel size right
2. is getting the overall file size right, this is the bit that you have yet to do.

If you follow the link trough to then end you will see that the last stage is where you do a save as and have a quality option. Depending on the size and the amount of detail in the image you will need to have adjust the quality down to meet the panachallenge file sizing limits. I generally find that for a simple image (ie not a lot of fine level detail) I can get a quality of 8, for more complex images (lots of fine detail) I may have to drop it as far as 6. The quality is a function of the level of jpeg compression, the lower the quality the greater the compression and the more compromises are made.

I generally go through a couple of cycles of this until I am happy. Do not have a foolproof method that works for all images. I would never print the images in the form that I submit them for a panachallenge, I have higher resolution and higher jpeg quality. Generally though because we only view images on the screen at a relatively small size the compromises are fine. After all we all live by the same rules.

Hope this makes sense, if not let me know I am happy to try again.
