Bill, this is very much in the style of those bird shots which get published in 1x (the website). It has all the exceptional elements that have the viewer thinking, "Once in a lifetime shot...." which, of course, doesn't do justice to the photog. These shots do not happen by chance. You have the wing beat just right, the highlights not blown, and the "surprise" elements all working in the right direction from the frozen splash on the moment of takeoff, to the head turned as if you posed it with the beak and eyes in razor sharp focus. A great shot from a great photog.

This was my #1 along with your entry in the Open. I thought both of them were exceptional. Congratulations on your double TF.

Great photo, great finish with double top 3.

Thanks for all the nice comments. I like to get these shots, but it happens too rarely.

Fantastic shot. I suspect a bit of planning went into getting it this well.

What an exceptional shot - you couldn't have captured it better.

Excellent, good timing and sharpness with a fast moving subject. Nr 1 in my favorites.

This is a fantastic BIF, you nailed the focus on his face.

Looks like he is coming after you, great eyes, etc. Might had removed or cropped out the reflection in bottom right side.

Wonderful action shot. I love the water droplets detail.

Lovely. I like the tight crop. And I like that the bird looked at its photographer...

Jade, it's a bit of luck isn't it? I have been to Stonington Point probably a dozen times over the years. Often there is nothing going on. One time I actually got a gull with a crab in its mouth. This time two gulls were chasing each other so the action was imbedded. I was with several other people, so I could not camp out for the day. I think that I got two dozen shots in a 15 minute period, and 14 were action shots. A number were discarded because the focus was off. I am finding that the FZ200 does pretty well in these conditions. Just focus when the subject is still, keep pressure on the trigger and follow the action. Perhaps I will put up some of the others in outtakes. And thanks for the kind eval!

Great impact, great sharpness in the eyes. Please tell me how you nailed the focus (and how many shots it took to get this one.) (My no. 1 and I'd be surprised if you didn't win with this one though you may have a challenge with one other entry.)

I am ignoring the title debate in the forums and concentrating on the pictures

great shot off the moment of flight rather than floating especialy as the gull is coming towards you

Outstanding catch. Dying to know the camera. I can only guess a small sensor for such amazing dof with an apparently long lens and moderately large aperture.

    Beautiful capture.

Nice shot. Sharp focus on the eyes really makes it work.
