Canon PowerShot SX280 HS       17th place, 24 points
1/200s, f4, ISO 160, 140mm, ?, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: Crop and resize.       Extra Info: Asked permission to Photograph this beauty on the street. Owner had been tying down a water tank in the back. He photo bombed this shot. Quite a character! The utility has been in his family since he was a kid.

cookiejar The thing I like about this challenge is seeing someone who truly gets it, understands key elements of composition and framing and gets an innovative shot by presenting a refreshing new take on a tried an true formula. This is one of those shots. The thing I find somewhat unfortunate about this forum is that often the original innovator is not rewarded in votes or otherwise appreciated. But I think that is true with so many innovators in so many fields. You get it right, but at first, no one understands what you managed to accomplish. When voters look at a shot and stop and think, they need to ask, "Why has this got my attention?" You deserved a top ten with this one but if it is any consolation, I've learned a lot from this shot and committed your technique to my memory in the hope I'll think to use it when the situation presents itself. (Maybe they would have got it if you'd trimmed even more off the right side, say just a little left of the fog lamp -- maybe -- but I still like this crop best.)

Quite to character obviously and he certainly brings life to the shot. I'd like to have seen the left side of the car not cropped & I don't understand why the driver is so hazy. Great car - well spotted.

Well spotted, and a good low-down angle - brings out the detail and the shapes. Were you able to include the other headlight ? - the picture feels a little unbalanced without it.

Thank-you jade. You are spot on. I did take the whole front of the car but the hardware store to the right was a very distracting background. I messed around with taking out the existing background, but in the end went with this crop. I'm relieved you got it.

It`s too bad you didn`t get the entire front of the car into the photo, as the symmetry would have added a lot. Nice to see the pride on the owner`s face.

would have preferred a full front of the car.

O.k. the character takes the shot up a whole other level so good thing he bombed it. The missing right side is unconventional and I considered it a defect initially but realize now it is a brilliant way to keep the character central to the shot. This is a great photo with all kinds of lessens on how to deal with distracting backgrounds. Your framing is bang on.
