  #161 Vanishing Point
Entry 8 of 29
top of a fin       ©2015 elliott
Panasonic DMC-FT5       8th place, 141 points
1/800s, f3.3, ISO 100, 28mm, Normal Program, Pattern, no flash
Post-Processing: stitch four shots. adjust highlights to add contrast in the clouds. slight sharpening although i don't think it made a difference. crop and resize.       Extra Info: this was during a hike in an area called 'devil's garden' in arches national park. this fin varies between eight and 12 feet wide maybe.

not your usual hard edged parallel lines but they do seem to lead you to a vanishing point of sorts in the la sal mountains in the distance.

Looks like Elliott's terrain. Nice foreground colours and nice sky.

Wonderful landscape and the cloud placed at the vanishing point is perfect.

Great spotting - a natural formation leading off into the horizon. Great colour and exposure

I suspect that if you painted this as an artist you would be accused of being overly technical or overly reliant on the vanishing lines that you had decided on. The rock strata, the trees and many of the clouds seem to trace perfectly to one point on the horizon.

Attractive as I find the shot it is perhaps a good example of 'false' vanishing points (v.p.). That being said it would be possible (easier with an higher viewpoint) to take each ridge of rocks and interpolate two parallel lines along the mains features to obtain a series of v.p's. You'd have to accept a lower degree of accuracy in calculating each v.p. as you can imagine.

Nice shot as I said. Hope the storm was moving away from you.

I've been in most of them, but Arches is one of my favorite NPs. You've caught a nice sweep here and a pleasure to look at.

Quite beautiful. So nice I keep struggling to see if I can justify putting it in my top ten since the VP is a little more subtle in this one. As an image, I will say it is far better than my own entry.

Different take on the theme. Well composed and perfectly exposed. Great job!

I agree with your comments, the rocks direct to a vanishing point the the added drama of the mountains in the distance and the clouds above it is great. Excellent image, well done!

fantastic shot with great use of colour and lighting

Such a great image and wonderfully processed. Although you are correct that there exists a vanishing point, the presentation is a bit weak on theme. Still a fave.

Great sky. The rocks create an unusual and interesting vanishing point.
