I ranked this picture very high. To find out it is such a long telephoto is surprising. This sort of subject makes me think of how the commercial photog being paid by the owner/user would want it to look, and how does this photog present it. The western sunset, when almost red, suggests fire and also strong feelings of pride or anger. The sea is real and eternal. The black oil tower that most of us hate is the object of pride for some. Is it setting or here forever? It could also be in a New Yorker ad for bourbon. "After a hard day's work it's good to kick back with Bullitt."

This was in my top 10, I think it should have finished higher.

Thanks to all for the comments and suggestions.

They never get the focal length for my camera right, it was 400 mm, with the 1.6 crop equals 640. The rig is about six miles from where I shot it. Can't get closer without a boat.

ysal after your comment I looked up Gina and found it had been set in 1980, I was here but I don't remember it not being there.

I had played with numerous crops and thought this was the best, but Neil you might have been right a pinch off the bottom.

I had played with the blur tool and/or the smudge tool on the water, but just went without changing the water.

Again thanks for the comments, suggestions, and votes.

Strong image. Quite underrated I think.

High in my picks. I wish it were bigger but your lens did a great job of bringing it this close. Oil companies must like the name Gina - I think there is a Gina (Krog) off Norway as well.

Maybe a bit too much water. About 1/3rd would be good.

Very nice silhouette and color. I'd crop up from bottom to cut out half of water. This would have the perceptual effect of bringing the tower forward and making a stronger compositional statement.

Great example of a sunset silhouette. I think that one could crop some from the right and left, and even from the top, which would accentuate the drilling rig. Nonetheless, this is a dramatic image.

I like the simplify and the saturated colour works well for this.

Very dramatic color. I know it's a long lens (3196mm??), but one usually expects the main subject to be in sharper focus.

I had to look up what "Gina" was. I had never heard of it after living in Southern California for 50 years!! Lovely juxtaposition of beautiful nature and ugly man-made object.

A beautiful sunset indeed and a nice crisp silhouette. Well done. Btw, I just watched Deepwater Horizon the other day, so now, seeing an oil rig, I actually think about all the people that may be out there.

To me the sea looks like oil and the sunset implies fire. It came across as an anti oil warning. No sure if this is your intention? That said, maybe use the golden rule for placing Gina?
