Moon set       ©2018 Mepo
Canon EOS Rebel T6i       4th place, 116 points
1/14s, f5.6, ISO 400, 496mm, Shutter Priority, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: Crop. Straighten. Reduce grain. Adjust levels, contrast, and brightness.       Extra Info: The red tint in the cloud and fog was from the sun which was rising behind me. It broached the horizon just as the moon slid into the river.
The ice fog over the river used to be called the White Death. It was believed that the diamond-like ice crystals would get into your lungs and freeze your breath.
At -17F (-27C) I wear a scarf over my mouth anyway :-)

Thanks very much for the generous comments (and votes:-). I did try this in monochrome and it gave a result that better suited a silhouette in the antediluvian interpretation. hehehe

I slipped up by not getting the whole tree black and will certainly try bracketing the exposure for the moon next time. A great learning experience.

Being there with the 'White Death' was a moving and poetic experience (thanks jomari) which got me thinking of how our forefathers coped with the intense cold and the fears of what it might do to your lungs.

As the sun rises, the ice fog disappears almost the instant the sun hits it. It falls to the surface and coats everything that is not already covered with snow, in white crystals.

    Beautiful shot. Congratulations on 4th.

I love your description '[The sun] broached the horizon, just as the moon slid into the river' - very poetic.

The detail is great, especially with such low light conditions. Excellent composition and beautiful colour.

Very nice composition. I would exposure bracket this scene and try to get the moon more properly exposed. You want the tree to be black anyway.

Nice to look this beautiful winter view from my monitor. In my favorites.

Some might object that this is not a pure silhouette because one can see detail; however, I am not of that school. This image nicely evokes the cold surroundings and it is well composed. Good job.

ysal: Well I'm happy you liked the shot in any case. I understand your opinion. I guess one out of two is nothing to complain about :-)
aoc46: Wow - Many thanks.
pencefn: Wow again - Thank you.
davemisunas: Wow #3 - many thanks. I checked the original and some other shots from different locations that morning and they all have the red ring around the moon. The pp has enhanced it a bit as well.

Very Nice image... my top pick... right on theme and a well done winter scene, the moon seems to have a edge of a different color did that appear in post processing or come with the original capture?

Moon related images are so great for getting silhouettes. Even though there is a bit of sun, this moon illuminated image is a stand-on entry. My Number 1.

This is a gorgeous image but does not scream out "silhouette".
