    the technique is to leave the branch connected
not only will it spring back but will continue to grow
in England this is called hedging and ditching for marking boundaries and keeping livestock in place.

    The natural inclination to regrow and thrive is a great image for the theme. I never knew you could re-establish a hedge like that.

    I saw it done before when I was working in a bird sanctuary. The warden did this to a tree, and bent it into the water to make a safe haven. One of my colleagues spotted this fallen tree and promptly lopped it off entirely much to the warden's chargin. How we laffed...

    I don't think I've ever seen this done to a tree, interesting. Trees are apparently very tenacious, thus fitting the theme.
