Thanks, everyone, for commenting.
Perhaps the composition would have been cleaner without the sprouting onion, but I thought it looked cool so couldn't resist including it.
As to the color of the "blood" (tomato juice, actually), fresh blood indeed is brighter red than shown here, but once it's exposed to air (like after you've had time to find and apply a bandage), it turns more rust color. And spread thin on a light board, it won't look so dark. Probably should have been a little darker than this, however.
SteveBee: I would consider storytelling among the most effective ways of communicating emotion.

Fun idea. I wish the blood looked a bit more real, which would have greatly added to the cringe factor.

That stings. Nicely done.

I certainly felt the "ouch" as well as the tears from the onion. Photographically I would have liked a greater depth of field to highlight the knife and the onion.

Too much going on here. I think you should have left our the book and bandaid box in the background, it will then be a simpler photo which draws attention to the knife. Doing this though would mean that your blood would need to be right color, at the moment it is quite far off. Your focus is on the onion green stem, and the blood is out of focus, needs to be the blood. Your lighting, exposure and PP is good though.

good and imaginative setup and still. Need larger DOF as now only the band-aid wrapper and front of green from onion looks in focus. Alternatively try to narrow DOF and key on the knife where spotted with blood

Been there, done that, so I can relate to the emotions involved. I like the use of DOF to highlight the band aid, but perhaps the knife and red onion should have been more prominent than the yellow onion. Great colour and detail.

this is a very rare occurrence where we have two pictures with a sprouting onion in them
the blood is not dark enough so must be a chilli mix

I think there's a difference between emotion and telling a story. This seems like the latter -- I was slicing an onion and cut my finger. (My blood is a lot darker redder than that.) The background is distracting and I think too many elements in the frame. You mentioned sharpening the center onion, but you cannot sharpen focus blur caused by shallow dof.
