  #166 Balance: A Composition Tool
Entry 14 of 31
Wave of the Day       ©2015 rd52
Canon EOS 7D       14th place, 67 points
1/800s, f9, ISO 320, 640mm, Shutter Priority, Pattern, no flash
Post-Processing: convert from a tiff to ps. Slightly crop to straighten the horizon and took some off the right to get rid of some of the foam. Also cropped some off the bottom to accentuate the surfer and wave. Image was then sized and smart sharpened for the challenge.       Extra Info: A friend of mine, Jim on the wave of the day. The swell was really inconsistent and seemed to be dying out, after taking the picture, I sat for about an hour to get another similar pic, but bummer, no more waves.

I thing the jetty is counter balancing the wave and Jim. It almost seems to be pointing to Jim. The mountain counter balances all that is happening in the lower part of the picture.

Love surfing, love the wave, even the surfer is o.k. but the jetty troubles me as it pulls all the attention from the subject.

great shot. think it means so much more when the person is a friend or someone you know. i live a few stone throws from the ocean and there are tons of photo ops but the only ones i like are the shots of my sons whether fishing or surfing. so this one of your friend carries a bit of weight with me. nice going.

Nice symmetrical balance and Jim too has good balance on the board. In my TT

Nice surfing shot - especially like the interplay of the green on the tower with the wave. Jim and the tower are the dominant visual elements here; balance would have been better if you could have caught Jim farther to the left, showing more over there and cropping off the right to balance him with the tower. As is, consider a square crop that could put two in an ideal rule-of-thirds relation.

Great surfing action, the processing is a bit lack lustre though, still in my top picks.

    very good water shot

To me it feels unbalanced. The tower draws my eye away from surfer, especially being smack in the center of the image.
