Thanks to all for the comments and suggestions.

It is not 3000 mm it is a 400 mm lens which on the 7d equals 640 mm. I live very close to Port Hueneme, within walking distance to its jetty. I know the boats routines in their coming and goings to the harbor, and knew the tug was alongside the car boat even though I couldn't see it. Usually the pilot disembarks sooner, but this time they were quite a bit further out than usual. I took the pic as soon as the tug emerged with the pilot. I would have liked to taken it sooner and showed more of the big ship.

It was late in the afternoon and I was shooting into the sun. The photo was pretty washed out. I played with different pp options and with the drab sky went with the b&w. SteveBee these boats are like big floating boxes. I looked it up and this boat is 650 feet long. When you see them up close they are huge, they look like a big building floating by.

Again thanks for the comments!

Congrats on sixth place. By perspective compression I meant that this long ship looks short because of the 3000mm reach of the lens tends to flatten depth. I know the ship isn't as tall as it is wide but it just looks that way with a shot taken from this perspective and there are no other visual clues or frame of reference to "correct" the illusion. Because my eye and my brain "see" the image differently, it gives me a figurative headache because I cannot reconcile the two different realities.

Good idea and well carried out. I wonder what the color image looked like. IMHO - the B&W lacks punch.

You couldn't ask for a better set of opposites - great capture.

Jade O "perspective compression" I don't understand what you mean. Other than shooting with my 3000mm (400mm really) the boat was pretty far out, and this is what you see when you shoot the stern of a boat. I did no image manipulation other than what is listed.

    Entertaining Subject

Great subject. I would have liked a little more contrast and definition.

Certainly illustrates large/small very well. Some more contrast might help. Unfortunately, the fundamental ugliness of Victorious Ace makes the photo hard for me to like.

good capture. getting the pilot off is great fun ...................... in fine weather

Interesting contrast. That 3000mm focal length turns the car boat into a floating square.
