Post-Processing: Just cloned out a few distracting elements, adjusted contrast and brightness, resized and sharpened.       Extra Info: The Canadair(Montreal) built Mark V Sabre, was used primarily by the RCAF in Europe. The Mark V featured the more powerful Orenda 10 engine and was produced from 1953 to 1958. Though a total of 370 Mark V's were produced for the RCAF, there are very very few left now in flying condition.

    Hey Jade - super shot!!! I really liked the fact that part of the rear end (note my complete lack of technical ability here) was missing. To me it was proof positive that this was taken in flight. What an awesome sight - I'm green with envy.

    Michael, sometimes you are so nice!!! ;-) The clipped elevator was, as you can see from notes below, the result of hitting 35mm at max wide angle (note in the technical note on the link below addressed to elliott that one advantage of having a "short" zoom like on the fz-30 is you don't have as much chance to scratch into the canopy - which wasn't a problem in this case anyway). The clipped elevator probably does add though it's hard for me to be objective (but better that side of the a/c than the other!) My personal like is how tight the subject is in the frame yet you still have the effect of lots of sky and an expansive shot. [Edit] Oh, the jagged lines, just from resizing I think.

    In the absence of an F.2b this has to be number 1. Fantastic shot. The composition took my eye right away; love the way you have fitted it into the frame. What are you doing in pp to get those jagged lines? At first I didn't like the clipped elevator but now I think it adds to the composition.

    F-86 in the U.S. was known as the CL-13 in Canada. (from wikipedia - On 30 July 1953, the first Sabre Mk.5 flew with the Orenda 10 engine, which gave it a clear rate of climb and ceiling advantage over earlier variants. Other Mk 5 improvements included a new oxygen system and improved maneuverability and low-speed characteristics achieved by increasing the wing chord by six in (15.2 cm) at the root and three in. (7.2 cm) at the wing tip along with fitting a small vertical wing fence. This modification, originated by North American on the F-86F, dramatically improved maneuverability, though the loss of the slatted leading edge increased landing speed and degraded low speed handling considerably.) The slatted edge re-appeared in the Mark VI version.

    mrsawyer I really liked the sharpness which comes with favourable lighting conditions. As to the clipped elevator at the back, the 35mm allowed nothing more - very tight getting it all in frame!

elliott Definitely not shot from the ground at an airshow (note that is a 35mm lens not 355mm!).

    Beautifully sharp! The colors are pleasing, especially the golden glow on the engines. Minor point: the rear of the plane is clipped.

    only one person i know could catch this in flight and i don't think it was from the ground in an airshow.
(i hope you aren't fooling me with a clever static display somehow)
i like the late afternoon lighting on the pods. suitable for framing.

    raf Yes I noticed the jagged line which is I think an artifact of downsizing the image. I guess old is relative. For me, this represents the very start of the fighter jet era and appears to me to be positively prehistoric!

fc If you're asking what the RCAF did with these planes in Europe, I have no idea; they were there before I was! (I was born some time after the last of these was manufactured.) (Edit) As an aside, the air (and air traffic) usually calms down before sunset and the combination of calm air and gentler light makes it easier for both photography and formation flying though as you may see in the outtakes, air traffic and flight conditions were the last of my concerns in making this shot.)

    Nice light on the plane. It has a sense of movement. The jaggy line of the left wing is a minor negative. More importantly it may not say 'old' strongly enough to make the top few.

    this looks like JadeO up and but before sunset. tight crop appeals to me an such a nice aircraft. what was its primary role?

    Yep, the fading light is the metaphor for the fading glory of these magnificent sentries whose airborne time is rapidly passing into the pages of history.
