Congratulations on capturing this so powerfully- I didn't know we had anything like this in North America

Congratulations, elliott. And thanks for the tip... I hadn't even thought about the wind.

hey thanks all. this was a fun one.
roland, the wind coming off the mountains (not visible in this shot) was quite strong. dust/sand protection for your equipment a must. spent most of vacation hiking and camping in utah but this place was incredible. will go back again for sure. enjoy.
steve, very flattering comment. will look for yours at dpr.
thanks.
will post an out take or two for color comparison.
again, thanks to all for encouraging comments and votes.

Very nicely done with the post processing. Great image.

This gives me a sense of ill-boding which I don't think I would get with the colour version, so well done! One of those times when I wish that pp info was not disclosed until after the judging.

Remarkable piles of sand. I would think they could be quite dangerous, yet they look beautiful and beckoning. Not sure black and white was the best choice since you had to add clouds as a result. Would love to see the color version in the outtakes!

Well done - the sculptured sand against the sky is really breathtaking

I've won some challenges on Digital Photography Review with B&W shots from Great Sand Dunes, and this shot is better than mine! The stretched clouds going in the same direction as the dunes is a nice touch.

An amazing photo, beautiful contrast between the clouds and shadows. My favorite in the challenge!

the clouds do make this picture. the sand alone would have been dull in BW

This is fabulous! Wonderful lighting. You did an excellent stitch job! I'm so excited... going there next month!

hey jade, thanks for comment.
the whole southwest (slight exaggeration) was burning while i was out there. so many days were totally cloudless under a high pressure system, yet the fires put enough haze in the air to wash out the sky in most of my photos. so this needed something. look for out takes later for another version or two from there.

Beautiful and effective. Very powerful shot though reading the PP took a little away once I realized the sky was added.
