My Sleep Challenge entries were both homeless shots taken in Toronto on December 23, 2009.
For the Main entry, it may not have been apparent (as no one commented) that the lighting was enhanced by a vehicle just off camera, whose headlights lit the subject. I had just set up for the shot and tried different exposures when this vehicle pulled alongside giving me the required lighting on the subject. So I seized the moment to make the capture.
What I was unprepared for was the young girl, perhaps high school age, who emerged from the SUV to place gifts at the side of this woman who was sleeping on the street. The girl seemed excited and quietly and quickly left as quickly and silently as she had arrived. I took it to be that this girl and her parents were making their own gesture that someone cared enough to try to make a gift of Christmas for someone who may not have had much of one.
If I am right, the thought may have been well intentioned and well received, however, I was also acutely aware that those who have little to celebrate sometimes do not want to be reminded of what it is they perhaps once had, and now have no longer. So I do not know the ending to this story, of who was this woman sleeping in the street, who was this girl bearing gifts, what was in the gifts, and how the gifts were received, or even by whom.
