...heavily grounded, why don't i fly a kite too.       ©2013 elliott
Olympus E-620       1st place, 263 points
1/33s, f4.5, ISO 100, ?, Manual, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: slight rotation, cloned off tiny bit on right so bolt wouldn't extend out of the frame, resize.       Extra Info: tried a few things with noise and sharpening but they made trade-offs that i didn't like when pixel peeping so kept it original except for mentioned pp.

although quite a show was going on, by the time i got to where i had a good view, things changed rapidly. camera balanced on metal railing, one test shot for focus and then this one happened. rain started and the show was over. grabbed my lightning rods and headed home.

yikes, thanks for all the great comments and votes!!!
and.... two 1st place this year and both with lightning. three's the charm...??? don't know how i could top this one, i really like it alot myself.
i've left the camera on 16x9 format for a while now and like the feel of the photos i take (well, mostly outdoor stuff) and that it makes me think about what i want the photo to look like with minimal physical pp.
i believe i may get to choose a theme now. i've had a long time to think about it.... zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.... years!!! i have a good one in mind that should be fun and creative.
thanks again all!!!

Spectacular - I'm sure we have a winner here. More than just a great lighting bolt, composing it to include the right amount of water and the skyline is what lifts it out of the ordinary - I won't even go in to how you arranged such a good cloud cover as well. Cloning off the tip was the right thing to do. This is exactly the shot I was planning to take :-)

    wow, some great comments, thanks!!
you know with plenty of thunderstorms in florida i may have more opportunities than other members to capture a lightning bolt or two. this forked type has been the hardest for me to capture. never got one as dramatic as this one. normally i would use a long exposure between five and twenty seconds. the problem with that is the equal time the camera takes to process for noise reduction before the shutter can be opened again. to cut down on some of that down time, i started using the bulb setting so i could at least shorten the exposure if the flash happened right after opening the shutter. out of focus noticed the exposure time as 1/33.... i don't know how that happened, i've seen odd exposure times here before. the camera info says 1/1, yet one of the viewers i used to look at this gave it at 1/1.03. maybe using the bulb setting threw off the numbers, but yes about one second exposure on this (apparently our exif is still visible so you can 'save image' and open it with one of your own programs to see the full exif). i don't use a tripod often but prefer a small bean bag that i can put on any surface and mush the camera into it for stability. the 'lightning rods' was a joke of course although i was leaning against a large metal railing and left quickly when the hair on my arms and head started to stand straight up (sorry, joking again).

Not only are these hard to do, they are hard to do well. My favorite for the open challenge.

is it 1/33 s ? This kind of exposure is not possible in less than 1 second @iso 100, f4.5

    Lightning rods? LOL!
My clear winner! It's so difficult to get a picture of lightning - tried it for myself lots and lots of times without any success... And moreover yours is amazing! Wonderful colors too.
Great!

Well, I have to give you my top vote. Timing these is often more luck than skill but you made the effort and got the result. Nothing to critique except I'd try to sharpen a little.

What a great lightening capture, definitely not an easy task. Right place, right time, & knowing where to look in sky to grab it. To me shot is good way you submitted not to dark where loose detail or end up with to much noise. Top ten.
