Extra Info: New Year’s Day is the largest and most significant celebration in Japan. One of the New Year’s traditions is to break open a wooden keg of sake and serve it to family and guests, usually taking place in larger gatherings. In some formal settings, the sake is served using fancy servers like this one. This ceremony, called Kagami Biraki,
symbolizes the opening to harmony and good fortune, and is also used at other “beginning” events such as weddings and store openings.

Thank you for your comments and votes. To those of you who wanted to see more in focus, I actually have shots where everything is in focus but I found it distracting from the main vessel which I wanted everybody's attention.

An interesting and attractive vessel, but unfortunate that so much is out of focus.

What an interesting picture and extra info. It's fascinating to learn how special days are celebrated in different parts of the world. I'm curious what the thin vertical rod is for?

An exquisitely crafted vessel. You have chosen an interesting angle, and captured it beautifully.

Interesting server. IMHO, I would have taken several images at different focus planes and photo-stacked to get a single image. I want to see more detail in the back of the server as well as the wooden implement.
